Annie Bethancourt is a singer/songwriter with an arresting voice,
interesting melodies, and a passion for storytelling.“You hear a lot of musicians say
that they knew all their lives they were destined to 'do music'-- but it wasn’t the case for me" says the 23 year-old singer. "I always wanted to
be a writer.”
Reminiscent of Joni Mitchell meets Janis Joplin,
Annie's sound ranges
from soft folk to soulful blues, a merging of influences such as Ben Harper,
Fiona Apple,Elliot Smith, and a musical family she describes as "like the Partridges--with
a dad."
Sans brightly painted school bus, they do have the makings of a musical clan: her
parents met in a folk group that toured around the United States in the early 70’s
(dad played bass, mom sang, both wrote songs), and her brother Matt is the bassist
for Atlantic record’s The Red West
Growing up Annie found many opportunities to participate in music, from singing in
school choirs to belting out gospel in church, but it wasn’t until her sophomore year
of college at UCSD that she started to combine her love of music with her love of
words. Now, three years later, Annie has formed her own record label, released a full album of
her songs (2002’s "the garage sessions”), earned a B.A in Sociology from UCSD,
spent 6 months living and playing in Spain, and has slowly grown into the type of
singer/songwriter that people recognize and embrace: one with a voice both soft and strong,
and, more importantly, a story to tell.
